Have you ever been in a fairytale village where life seems suspended in an undefined time? Castle Combe in Wiltshire is one of the enchanted places in the English countryside you might have always loved to visit. Set on a hill, the historical center is all along a curvy street. This charming road runs between a bridge over a stream of water and the local church. Alongside small old houses with lovely decorations make Castle Combe one, if not the prettiest village in the United Kingdom. Only two hours driving distance from London, some images of Castle Combe will inspire the wanderlust to visit it in person.

St. Andrew Church

In many Castle Combe’s images, you might notice a white pinnacle in the background. The top belongs to the local church of Saint Andrew. Originally built in the 13th century, over the centuries several extensions modified the original aspect of the church. However, the church, as you see it nowadays, was almost wholly rebuilt in the 19th century after that the church, in unstable condition, was taken down in 1850.

Images of Castel Combe village

Like nowhere else in the area, Castle Combe is the perfect English village. Strolling around the main road, you will notice cottages of honey-colored Bath stone lined up in this enchanting village. Among all the small places in the Cotswolds, Castle Combe attracts many visitors lured by the idea of going back home with images of the quintessential picturesque village. So, while the old town is car-free, the only problem you might have is the presence of the other visitors trying to take your same photos.

While there I didn’t find many other visitors. However, some guides recommend heading to Castle Combe early in the morning or in the late afternoon. If you are going for photography purposes, then I would suggest you go in the morning when the light is better.

Castle Combe Race Track

Just outside this fascinating English village, there is another place that attracts people for a very different reason. The Castle Combe Circuit is the race track based on a reconstruction of the perimeter track of the local RAF (Royal Air Force) division. Used as an airfield during WWII and as a base for Polish airmen, the circuit opened in 1950. Moreover, the track is circa 9768 ft long (3 km), and it hosts race meetings, track days, and driving experiences.
